Emirates Medical Association was established in 1980 as a non-profit organization.
The Emirates Medical Association Ophthalmic Society (EMAOS) was established in 1984 under the leadership of Dr. Anwar Sajwani and Alla Al Zawawi. The first board meeting was conducted in Fujairah 1984.The society continued to grow, conducting biennial conferences, annual seminars and other CME activities through the Emirates subspecialty clubs.
EMAOS participated actively in organizing many conferences including the 1st Arab Society conference in 1998 and the 8th Pan Arab African Council of Ophthalmology Conference (PAACO) in 2005. The society is also organizing the annual Vision X conference in partnership with the Dubai World Trade Center.
In 2007 EMAOS established the subspecialty clubs; these are the Emirates Cataract & Refractive Surgery Club (ECRS), Emirates Retina Club (ERC) and Emirates Club of Optometry (ECO).
EMAOS is affiliated with the International Federation for Ophthalmologic Societies and the Middle East African Council of Ophthalmology. EMAOS is considered to be one of the most active societies of the Emirates Medical Association.
EMAOS is currently under the leadership of Dr. Manal Taryam, a Retinologist at the Dubai Health Authority. Dr. Taryam is currently working with a team of dedicated ophthalmologists to improve the services provided to members of EMAOS and other ophthalmic care providers. The EMAOS board includes Dr. Anwar Sajwani as vice-president, Dr. Thuraya Al Hashmi as Treasurer, Dr. Hani Sakla as chair of the scientific division and Dr. Khaled Al Mansouri as Chair of the social division.
Vision: Enhancing UAE ophthalmology to international standards
Mission: Promoting up-to-date ophthalmic education to all ophthalmologists and eye care providers in the country, encouraging skill transfer through regular scientific and social meetings.
